South Tampa neighborhood struggles to recover months after Hurricane Milton

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA — As many Tampa Bay coastal communities are still fighting to recover from our recent hurricanes, a South Tampa neighborhood is having its own post-hurricane problems.

Congresswoman Kathy Castor recognized two people Friday for helping their neighbors before, after, and during the storms.

Castor recognized Stephanie Poyner and James Adair as Port Tampa “Hurricane Heros.”

She also visited the home of James Adair and his wife Carly. They suffered major flood damage during Hurricane Milton.

“Unfortunately with Milton, the rain never stopped coming down and so we ended up having water intrusion into the house,” Carly Adair said.

After the storm, they had friends from Rotary Clubs show up to help, a small army of friends. So, they asked some of those friends to go help their neighbors.

“I just re-deployed the people to the neighbors, and so that day between the 30-ish people that were here, we were able to attack four houses, did three tear-outs,” James Adair said.

Now, they and their neighbors are still having trouble doing work on their home so they can move back in.

“We’re waiting for insurance money, possibly some permits and logistics, but most people in Tampa are really in a holding pattern due to insurance,” James Adair said.

He said many of his neighbors are having the same problem, as they keep fighting to recover.
