Speed Limits Reduced on Two Segments of I-275 Effective Sunday Night

If you’re commuting through Tampa Bay, brace yourself for a potentially longer drive on Monday morning.

Starting Sunday night, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will implement lower speed limits on parts of I-275 in both Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.

According to FDOT, these adjustments will affect two specific work zones: the Howard Frankland Bridge and a section of I-275 in Pinellas County stretching from 38th Avenue North to 4th Street North, right where the Howard Frankland Bridge commences.

The speed limit in these zones will drop to 55 mph, marking a decrease of 5 to 10 mph, depending on the specific area of I-275 you’re traveling on.

The new southbound HFB was opened earlier this year, and upon completion of construction, the bridge will consist of four general-use lanes and four express lanes, two in each direction.

FDOT is also adding a pathway adjacent to the bridge specifically for cyclists and pedestrians. Officials said all of the work on the bridge is estimated to be completed by Spring 2026.

In Pinellas County, the affected stretch of I-275 is being widened and getting two new express lanes in each direction. That project is not expected to be done until 2030.

A spokesperson with FDOT said workers will begin replacing the signs Sunday night, and the new speed limit will take effect Monday morning. Drivers will get a week-long grace period, where law enforcement will give out warnings and educate travelers on the change.
