Springfield Fire Dept., Crime Stoppers looking for tips in arson case

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Sangamon/Menard County Crime Stoppers is assisting the Springfield Fire Department in an arson investigation, and they are asking for help from the public in solving the case.

Officials said the fire happened on Monday around 3 a.m. at Butternut Hut in downtown Springfield. A suspect was recorded on video breaking a window to the business and throwing something inside that was already on fire. When the object landed, it burst and the fire started to expand.

At the time of the crime, people were living in the apartments above the business. Officials did not say if there were any injuries.

The suspect was recorded wearing dark clothing and carrying a tan bag on their back.

Anyone with knowledge of the suspect’s identity is asked to submit a tip to Crime Stoppers by calling 217-788-8427, visiting their website or using the P3 Tips app. All tips to Crime Stoppers are both anonymous and eligible for a cash reward should an arrest be made.
