SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — An investigation into a weekend homicide in Springfield has led to an arrest, according to an announcement by the Springfield Police on Monday afternoon.

Authorities reported that a man was found dead from a gunshot wound early Saturday morning in the 400 block of East Washington Street. In a recent update, Commander Jarod Maddox revealed that detectives have identified the suspect as 29-year-old Christopher M. Coleman.

“Thanks to the efforts of the Proactive Crime Unit and the Street Crimes Unit, detectives successfully located the suspect in the 800 block of West North Grand Avenue,” Maddox stated. “Mr. Coleman was apprehended without any trouble.”

Initially, Coleman was taken to the Sangamon County Jail on charges not related to the murder, Maddox noted. According to inmate records, he was booked for possession and distribution of a controlled substance and was also wanted on a separate in-state warrant for undisclosed charges.

On Monday, the Sangamon County State’s Attorney, John Milhiser, officially charged Coleman with first-degree murder.

Coleman is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

As for the victim of the shooting, his identity remains unreleased. Jim Allmon, the Sangamon County Coroner, told WCIA that an autopsy was scheduled for Monday, and he will provide both preliminary results and the identity once the autopsy is complete.
