Springfield Police, ATF announce joint gun crime task force

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — A man was killed early Monday morning in a shooting in Springfield, police said. A suspect has been taken into custody.

The shooting happened in the area of 12th and Kansas Streets. Police officials said officers responded at 5:47 a.m. to a report of a possible shooting. When they arrived, the officers found an adult male dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Officials added that an adult male suspect was identified and was taken into custody “on unrelated charges.”

The investigation is ongoing, police said. The victim’s identity will be released at a later time by the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office.

WCIA reached out to the Springfield Police Department for more information but did not hear back immediately.
