SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Eight students were ejected during a football game between Springfield Southeast High School and Springfield High School on Monday night.
A spokesperson for Springfield Public School said the students were removed from the game following an “altercation” on the field. It happened during the fourth quarter of the game.
The district said that players who are ejected are benched for at least one game, per Illinois High School Association rules. Now, IHSA officials are reviewing game footage to figure out if any further consequences are necessary.
Although the district did confirm that eight students were ejected, a spokesperson for the school district declined to comment on how many students from Southeast High School vs. Springfield High were involved.
Monday’s match at Spartan Field was a rescheduled game between the two schools; the game had been rained out on Saturday in the first quarter.
