SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The City of Springfield is hosting an event this weekend, which aims to make it easier for Illinois residents to get rid of old oil, chemicals, lightbulbs or other hazardous waste.

The Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Event will take place at Chamberlain Park, located at S. McCreery Avenue and E. Capitol Avenue, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27.

Donations that will be accepted include antifreeze, lawn chemicals, mercury thermostats, old gasoline, pool chemicals and so much more. The city will not accept latex paint, biohazard waste, fire extinguishers or fireworks/gun powder. You can find a full list of acceptable — and unacceptable — items to drop-off here.

To participate, residents must register in advance. To sign up to get a voucher for the event, click here. You can also call the Office of Public Works at 217-789-2255. On the day of the event, be sure to bring your voucher — you can either bring it on your mobile device, or print a copy to show at the event.
