SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — On Thursday, Springfield’s Henson Robinson Zoo announced the death of a longtime resident.

“Duffy” the two-toed sloth passed away from cancer with her caretakers and veterinarian by her side, according to the zoo. Duffy came to the Henson Robinson Zoo in 2001 and was 26 years old when she died. The life expectancy for two-toed sloths in the care of humans is around 16 years.

Since her death, the zoo has brought in a young two-toed sloth named “Lorenzo.” Although Duffy can never be replaced according to the zoo, Lorenzo has brought “hope and happiness” after a period of sadness.

Now, the zoo is inviting visitors to celebrate Duffy’s life and asking them to welcome Lorenzo to the Henson Robinson Zoo. Opening day for the 2025 season is April 5. The zoo will be open to visitors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
