MARION COUNTY, Fla. – The Florida Department of Transportation announced that State Road 19 is now open after being shut for over a day due to nearby brush fires.
The road closure affected the stretch between State Road 40 and County Road 314, located just south of Salt Springs, as stated in a press release from FDOT.
According to the release, the brush fire ignited on Saturday afternoon, spreading along the banks of Lake George and into the Ocala National Forest.
Officials have assured that law enforcement and FDOT crews will remain on standby through the night, ready to respond if conditions deteriorate.
If you encounter smoky conditions on the road, you are encouraged to contact the Florida Highway Patrol by dialing *FHP (*347).
Drive with lights on low beam. Your lights help other drivers see your vehicle, so be sure they all work. Keep your windshield and headlights clean, to reduce the glare and increase visibility.
Slow down. Watch out for slow-moving and parked vehicles. Open your window a little and listen for traffic you cannot see.
Reduce the distractions in your vehicle. Turn off the radio and avoid using your cell phone. Your full attention is required.
Use the right edge of the road or painted road markings as a guide. Be patient – avoid passing and/or changing lanes. Signal turns well in advance and brake early as you approach a stop. If you must pull off the road, signal, then carefully pull off as far as possible and turn your hazard lights on.
Motorists are asked to drive safe, stay alert, and follow the detour in place.
