St. Andrew's boys add international player as they prep for state title defense

In Savannah, Georgia, the St. Andrew’s boys’ basketball team has made a habit of celebrating victories, claiming the championship title three times over the past four years. Yet, as they gear up for the new season, the reigning GIAA Class AAA state champions may find the path to another triumph more challenging.

This season, they face the significant absence of Zayden Edwards, last year’s Class AAA Player of the Year, who was instrumental in their success with averages of 18.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.6 steals per game.

Fortunately, the team still boasts talent with returning all-state athlete Ja’cari Glover. Additionally, they have strengthened their lineup by welcoming Milos Copic, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard from Serbia, to their roster.

The team’s non-region schedule is formidable, featuring matchups against strong competitors like Effingham County, South Effingham, and Bradwell Institute. Notably, only two of these games are against local Savannah teams, Johnson and Savannah High.

Head coach Mel Abrams remarked on the challenges posed by changes in the GHSA’s rules and rankings. “From what I’ve heard, the GHSA has adjusted their system,” he said. “For many schools, playing against us may not benefit them as much now, which makes it even tougher for us as a GIAA school.”

St. Andrew’s first game of the season is Nov. 15 against Morgan County at 4 p.m.
