St. Paul AME Zion Church Celebrates 43rd Annual MLK Day Service with Community Unity and Reflection

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – A gathering of local residents at St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church commemorated the enduring impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through a service filled with scripture on Sunday evening.

The event, organized by the Johnson City Ministerial Alliance, saw attendees engaging in hymn singing, scripture readings, and the recitation of King’s well-known quotes, celebrating his profound contributions to civil rights.

Dr. King, a pivotal figure in the Civil Rights Movement and a Baptist minister, championed the cause from 1955 until his tragic assassination in 1968. Recognized as a federal holiday in 1983 following the signing by President Ronald Reagan, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was first celebrated nationwide in 1986.

King’s ministry was deeply rooted in the principles of equality and national unity, advocating for change through peaceful means and spiritual connectivity.

“Thank you, Lord, for the example of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Thank you for the example, not just for his words; but for his actions. We thank you, Lord, for using him. Not only in the 60’s during the Civil Rights Movement, but even today that the words we stir in our hearts and mind as we seek to walk together.”

Attendees were reminded of King’s dream and his faith.

“First and foremost, he was a preacher of the gospel of Jesus Christ, so we represent and appreciate that legacy,” Johnson said. “It’s a great reminder that we are called together to not just point out injustice, but to speak and stand against it and to operate in love; love is what covers the multitude of sin.”

Reverend with St. Paul A.M.E Zion Church, Charlotte Comage, said the service reflected how King instilled his beliefs into his visions.

“He believed that all men should be created equal regardless of their denomination, color, creed and that everyone had a chance to do something and become what they believed in,” Comage said. “There was a vision there and he wanted everyone to be treated equal.

“His faith took us to new, higher levels. He believed that everything we did as a vision of faith, of nonviolence, any kind of action that we had to do had to be commemorated with love and justice for all.”

Johnson said King’s dream and teachings are beneficial in the world today.

“To come together as Christians, as believers to demonstrate what we believe,” Johnson said. “This is more of a demonstration of what we are called to do as people, as a believing community, that we come together to show the unity and agreement we need, especially in this day and time.”
