ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — Officials from the City of St. Petersburg report that the reconstruction efforts at Tropicana Field are progressing smoothly, both in terms of schedule and budget.

The stadium is set to be fully functional, reaching its pre-hurricane capacity, just in time for the Tampa Bay Rays to face the Chicago Cubs on their opening day, April 6th.

“We were optimistic about meeting the deadlines, but now, being in February and seeing everything on track and within budget is incredibly rewarding,” stated Beth Herendeen from the City of St. Pete.

The facility suffered extensive roof and water damage following Hurricane Milton in 2024. Initial efforts prioritized roof repairs and waterproofing, and eventually involved around 300 contractors daily to ensure the venue was ready for the 2026 MLB season.

“Fans will find the stadium nostalgically familiar, without significant visual changes. It will feel refreshed, with no visible signs of the hurricane’s impact,” Herendeen added.

It’s unclear when the Tampa Bay Rays will begin to have access to the stadium to begin practice, and contractors will continue to put the finishing touches on the building until opening day.
