St. Petersburg Community Engages with Win! Derby on Noise Concerns and Future Development Plans

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — The Win! Derby Poker Room in St. Petersburg is becoming increasingly popular with local residents, but it’s also facing noise complaints from nearby neighborhoods.

On Thursday, approximately 50 local residents convened with representatives from Win! Derby to find a mutually agreeable solution to the issue.

The usually bustling parking lot was noticeably less crowded on Thursday night. However, during weekends, the venue comes alive with a farmers’ market and various events that attract significant crowds to the previously underutilized space. This surge in activity has not gone unnoticed by those living nearby.

“The music goes on until 10 p.m., and there have been times I’ve gotten out of bed to walk outside, wondering, ‘What is that thumping sound?’” shared Lisa Reinbolt, a nearby resident.

The former dog track sits in District 2, close to the Renaissance and Riviera Bay neighborhoods. Residents from both came to Win! Derby for a community conversation to address noise complaints and more.

“Every weekend we have had concern after concern. We have relayed that directly to the owners and they have been working. They’ve had a very long list of things that they’ve tried to do to mitigate, but they recognize that there is more work to do and so they will continue that. They’ve given us that commitment,” said St. Petersburg City Council Member Brandi Gabbard. “We hope that within the next 30 days, there will be some dramatic changes that will happen and that noise complaint will go down dramatically.”

Sagi Genger is the chairman and chief executive officer at Win! Derby. He said they want to find a balance of being an event space and being a good neighbor.

“So we won’t have, I think, immediate dramatic solutions, but we’ll be able to improve it so that by March, the people of the neighborhood will feel a significant improvement,” Genger said.

But could more noise be on the way? The land is up for lease, and Genger said a large number of significant developers are putting in proposals.

“This is, I would think, one of the most important pieces of real estate open for development in an urban area in the United States,” Genger said. “St. Petersburg is dramatically under retail. There isn’t enough entertainment venues here given the number of people who live here. So I think there’s a lot of room to be improving the entertainment options, the nightlife options here, and hopefully we can help address that.”

8 On Your Side asked Gabbard and Reinbolt what they would like to see in the space.

“I wouldn’t mind it being a concert venue, enclosed,” Reinbolt said.

“Whatever ends up happening here, I just want to make sure that it doesn’t impede the quality of life for the neighbors that surround it and that it’s something that our community can really be proud of and enjoy as an amenity as well,” Gabbard said.

Win! Derby expects to hear from developers in early February.
