In a heartfelt nod to the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, students at a Lowcountry elementary school in Beaufort County, South Carolina, experienced a memorable day steeped in history and patriotism. A notable highlight was the presence of State Superintendent Ellen Weaver, who made a special visit to Coosa Elementary School on Tuesday.

During her visit, Superintendent Weaver engaged with students about the significance of serving the nation and understanding its rich heritage. Coosa Elementary is particularly notable for having one of the largest populations of military families in the state, making this history lesson especially meaningful for the community.

Reflecting on the day, student Jonah Bissell expressed a simple yet profound sentiment, saying, “America means to me that it’s my home country and I just like the way it is.”

This visit was part of the Palmetto Civics Project, an initiative aimed at preparing students to fully appreciate the privileges and responsibilities that come with American citizenship. Through this project, educators hope to instill a deep sense of civic duty and national pride in the next generation.

Weaver said the visit is part of the Palmetto Civics Project, which prepares students to embrace the privileges and responsibilities of American citizenship.

“I want our students to know that history, to embrace that history, and most importantly, to see themselves in that history,” Weaver said. “The story of America is their story. And so, this is a wonderful opportunity to make sure that all of our students know that.”

Beaufort County Superintendent Frank Rodriguez said that since they are a military purple star district, it’s important that military families are welcomed in, and that their service is recognized.
