CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Stephens Family YMCA is adding a 24-7 satellite gym less than a mile from its main building on Fields South Drive to accommodate rising demand.

They call it YMCA Express. It’s a gym open all hours of the day for $5 more per month for members who want shorter wait times.

“We weren’t at 30 minutes, but we were pretty close. I mean there were at some point times where we would have 12 individuals waiting in line just to get started,” said wellness director Eddie Edwards. “So after a few months of that, the conversations were being had about adding another line.”

The YMCA said it hopes the Express can help provide a less crowded place for some of the 14,000 members it serves.

The Y’s CEO said roughly 300 members have already signed up for the new service since it opened last Monday.
