Storm Team 3: Dangerous heat expected this weekend

SAVANNAH, Ga. () – Get ready for the hottest stretch of the summer so far. Dangerous and extreme heat is expected this weekend and into Monday, as a strong area of high pressure settles over the region. This system is pulling in hot and humid air from the Gulf, pushing temperatures to potentially record-breaking highs. Plan to stay indoors and take precautions to stay cool and safe.

Today:
Temperatures will soar into the upper 90s, with heat index values between 105° and 110°. A Heat Advisory is in effect from 10 AM Saturday through 10 AM Sunday.

Sunday and Monday:

Temperatures soar as highs climb into the low 100s, with heat indices near 115°. At 10 AM Sunday, the Heat Advisory transitions to an Excessive Heat Watch, lasting until 8 PM Monday. This is likely to be upgraded to an Excessive Heat Warning sometime tomorrow.

Due to the severity of this heat, Weather Aware Days are in effect for both Sunday and Monday. Prolonged exposure can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, so it’s critical to take these warnings seriously.

We’re watching for potential record-breaking highs:

  • Today’s record: 102° (set in 2010)
  • Sunday’s record: 100° (set in 2010)
  • Monday’s record: 102° (set in 1949)

We may challenge or even break these records.

Looking Ahead:
Relief arrives midweek as highs drop back into the mid 90s from Tuesday through the rest of the week. This is as rain chances increase as the high-pressure system moves out, allowing for a return to a more typical summertime pattern. Still, with August around the corner, more extreme heat is likely before summer ends.

Stay hydrated, limit time outdoors, and check on vulnerable family and neighbors.
