SAVANNAH, Ga. — Residents can expect a shift in weather as a storm system approaches the area, bringing rain and cooler temperatures starting Sunday.

Saturday offered pleasant weather with a crisp morning transitioning into a sunny and breezy afternoon. However, Saturday night will see a drop in temperatures accompanied by increasing cloud coverage, setting the stage for a mostly cloudy start to Sunday.

Sunday morning should remain dry as the region anticipates moisture buildup in the mid-levels of the atmosphere. By evening, rain chances will climb, with a 30% likelihood of showers anticipated for Sunday evening and overnight.

The probability of rain peaks on Monday, with scattered showers expected throughout the day. Although rainfall rates are not expected to be overwhelming, persistent downpours in specific areas could lead to localized street flooding due to saturated ground conditions.

As the week progresses, cooler conditions will prevail, with daytime highs predominantly in the 60s. From Tuesday to Thursday, there will be a 30% chance of rain ahead of a more robust cold front anticipated by week’s end. Fortunately, by Halloween next Friday, skies are expected to clear, ushering in brisk mornings and below-average daytime temperatures.

Tracking the Tropics

The tropics continue to feature Melissa, which intensified into a hurricane at 2 p.m. Saturday. The system is poised to rapidly intensify through the rest of this weekend and bring a potentially devastating impact to Jamaica Sunday into Monday. Most projections have this system nearing Category 5 status south of the island.

The longer range forecast pulls the system to the northeast into eastern Cuba, then through portions of The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos. Cold fronts moving through the US will help keep this system away from North America. There are currently no tropical threats for the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry.
