Storm Team 3 Forecast: Weekend Rain Showers Usher in Refreshing Temperature Drop

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Saturday promises a mix of showers and thunderstorms, with the potential for some intense weather, just before winter makes its presence felt once again.

On Friday, Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport experienced record-breaking warmth, hitting a high of 85°F, surpassing the previous record of 84°F set in 2018. The day was marked by periodic showers that persisted from the afternoon into the early evening.

Warm and muggy weather persists into Saturday, beginning with temperatures in the 60s. Highs are expected to climb into the 70s and 80s, accompanied by brisk winds that could gust over 25 mph, even outside of storm activity.

Saturday’s forecast includes intervals of scattered showers and storms, though it won’t be a complete washout. The initial batch of showers is anticipated around midday, with the storm activity intensifying as the afternoon wears on.

There is a potential for severe weather, particularly in the afternoon and evening, with some storms possibly producing damaging straight-line winds exceeding 35-40 mph. While the primary concern remains strong winds, there is a slight chance of an isolated tornado.

Heavier rainfall by the evening could bring flooding concerns to areas that drain poorly, but widespread flooding is not anticipated.

The final round of showers and embedded storms will move through the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry overnight Saturday into Sunday. Rain chances completely wind down by Sunday morning.

Sunday will be cooler and breezy as cold air works into the area. A return to winter temperatures is on the way for the new week.

Monday starts out freezing with wind chills in the 20s for much of the area. Highs struggle to reach the 50s while winds remain elevated again. The dry air moving in will create a higher fire danger, so it would be best not to burn anything outdoors.

A hard freeze is expected for most of the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry Tuesday morning, with the exception of our Sea Islands.

With some blooming already underway, take steps to protect sensitive vegetation along with pets, pipes for anyone with outdoor plumbing and check on neighbors.

Tuesday will be slightly warmer with highs well into the 50s under plenty of sunshine. Wednesday brings another freezing start for areas west of I-95 before highs make their way into the 60s.

Temperatures continue to warm up for the middle and end of next week, with highs back in the 60s and 70s and warmer mornings in the 40s and 50s.
