Storm Team 3: Tracking higher rain chances and coastal flooding

SAVANNAH, Ga. () — Breezy conditions continue into Sunday as we are tracking rain chances and coastal flooding at each high tide.

Saturday has ended up mostly dry as rain chances were limited to only passing showers. Breezy east-northeasterly winds continued through the day, and this coupled with astronomical high tides will bring coastal flood concerns.

Expect a Coastal Flood Advisory to be in effect within two hours of each high tide for the next several days. About one-half foot of saltwater inundation is expected for this weekend’s tides. Even higher tides are possible Monday and especially Tuesday with the full moon, but it does not look like there will be major flooding based on the forecast at Fort Pulaski.

An unsettled pattern stretching from portions of the Northern Gulf Coast through Florida, with a few weak areas of low pressure will help spike our rain chances Sunday and Monday. Expect scattered to numerous showers at times between the pre-dawn hours Sunday morning and the early afternoon. Drier time wins out by the afternoon but no part of the day will be a total washout. Expect scattered showers at times Monday before high pressure dominates the middle portion of the week.

The tropics feature a developing area of low pressure, located well south of the Cabo Verde Islands. This system has a 60% chance of developing into a depression or named storm over the next week. The environment supports slow development by the middle to end of the week. Long range guidance is coming into agreement on the track of the system eventually taking it north of the Leeward Islands.

There is plenty of time to monitor for changes, but there are currently no imminent tropical threats to the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry.
