Storm Team 3: Much needed rain returns for the weekend

SAVANNAH, Ga. () – We’re tracking some much-needed rain moving in this weekend, especially on Sunday and Monday. A weak low-pressure system currently near the Bahamas is slowly drifting west-northwest toward Florida. While it’s carrying tropical moisture, it’s not expected to develop into a tropical system. Instead, it will bring increased humidity and higher rain chances across the Southeast.

Expect more cloud cover through the weekend, with a few isolated showers today and heavier, more widespread rain on Sunday. Today will be the drier day of the weekend. Given the ongoing drought conditions across the region, the upcoming rain will be beneficial.

Temperatures will stay near normal, with highs in the lower 80s. However, strong northeast winds will continue, with gusts up to 25 mph expected into next week. These persistent winds are also pushing tides higher along the coast. At Fort Pulaski, high tides are expected to reach minor flood stage tonight and Sunday and could rise just above that level on Monday.

Looking ahead, drier weather is on the way for Tuesday and Wednesday as high pressure builds in from the north. Expect a mix of sun and clouds with highs climbing into the mid 80s. Another cold front arrives Thursday into Friday, bringing cooler temperatures and a return of isolated rain and storm chances.

Tropical Updates

Besides for the weak low-pressure system in the Bahamas, there is a 50% medium chance of development within the next week for a wave expected to develop off of Africa. The wave is forecast to interact with another disturbance over the eastern tropical Atlantic and then move westward after that.  Environmental conditions are expected to become conducive for some slow development of the system in a few days, and a tropical depression could form by the end of next week. At this point, models have it curving out to sea again at this time. The next name on the list is Jerry!
