CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Thursday night, Champaign Central High School took time to highlight the work young artists have collected throughout their educational journey. From photography to paintings, students of all ages showed off skills beyond their years.

Hundreds came out to Champaign Central High School for their student art exhibition. Kids K-12 could display art of all kinds for anyone to take in.

“This year we had 610 pieces,” said art instructor Shane Rodems, “What all goes into it is just a big community event. Like we have our national Honor Society kids like help us out a lot because they’re a force to be reckoned with. And then a teacher here probably for like from 6:30 to 8:30 every day.”

From sculptures to digital art, whatever your preferred style is, you can most likely find it at the exhibit.

“This is all the kids like blowing their brain, like getting their brains to kind of like make something really beautiful.” said Rodems, “Their creativity happens and we just kind of let it roll and kind of hopefully nurture it how we can.”

WCIA caught up with one of the students who showed off their work today — and won an award.

“I got some other street photos from Chicago, and then I got a few other photos from other categories,” said Adam Edwards.

Edwards is a senior at Champaign Central High School. He specializes in photography and put together a portfolio from the past few years.

“Motivated me to know that I am doing good in the passion that I’m wanting to pursue after high school,” Edwards said. “It’s almost like I’m setting my dreams right here at Central.”

A total of 17 seniors were put in the senior spotlight to be recognized for what they made. The exhibit is open at Central High School from May 1-12. There’s also a weekend viewing on May 10.
