BRISTOL, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) reports one juvenile was killed following a head-on collision in Sullivan County on Monday afternoon. Sullivan East High School Principal Andy Hare confirmed the juvenile was a student at his school.
According to a report from the THP, the crash took place on Hickory Tree Road near the intersection of Sand Bar Road at around 12:44 p.m. Monday.
The report said a Chevy Trailblazer and Toyota Matrix were traveling in opposite directions on Hickory Tree Road when they collided. “Both vehicles were in the opposite lane of travel upon impact, striking head-on on the passenger’s side of the vehicles,” the report states.
Both vehicles came to an uncontrolled rest partially blocking the northbound travel lane against a guardrail, the THP said.
A 16-year-old Sullivan East student who was a passenger in the Toyota was killed in the crash, the report said. The 17-year-old driver of the Toyota was injured, and charges are pending against that juvenile, according to the THP.
Hare gave the following statement:
Sadly we lost a student in a tragic car accident. Our entire school and community is saddened at this tragedy and our thoughts and prayers go out to their family and pray for strength during this difficult time. We also pray for our other student who was also injured in the accident and are thankful for the first responders and health care providers that are working with her.
Andy Hare, Sullivan East HS principal
The driver of the Chevy, a 22-year-old woman, was also injured and charges are pending against her, as well.
The THP said the crash remains under investigation.
