RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Health experts are raising alarms as a previously rare condition, which results in a severe allergy to red meat, is rapidly increasing across the United States.

Researchers from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) have observed a significant uptick in cases of alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), a disease transmitted by ticks. Their findings indicate a staggering 100-fold surge in AGS cases from 2013 to 2024.

The data reveals that a recent wave of cases has contributed significantly to this increase. The incidence of AGS jumped dramatically from 23.46% to 94.06% between the periods of 2021-22 and 2023-24.
