UNICOI COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — A North Carolina suspect wanted for kidnapping and armed robbery was arrested after a police chase in Unicoi County Wednesday morning.
Frank Rogers, Chief Deputy with the Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department (UCSD), said officers were notified just before 6 a.m. by the sheriff of Winston-Salem regarding an armed robbery and kidnapping in their jurisdiction.
The suspect reportedly had a hostage and North Carolina authorities were able to track their location to Unicoi County, Rogers told News Channel 11.
Deputies with the UCSD and Erwin police located the suspect in the vehicle that belonged to the victim at the Black Diamond Gas Station in Unicoi just after 6 a.m.
A brief pursuit ensued and ended on I-26 East near exit 32 in Unicoi County after a pit maneuver, Rogers said.
“We’ve found that when everybody works together, good things happen,” Rogers said. “From the Winston-Salem sheriff and Erwin police and our officers, everybody. Just the reason we have a successful end to this is everybody working as a team. It’s a team effort. These boys have done a remarkable job. We tore up a couple of cars, but, you know, we got the victim back for her family. That’s what matters most.”
The suspect will be charged with aggravated kidnapping, fleeing and evading out of Unicoi County, Rogers said.
“Our officers are trained to conduct these high-risk maneuvers, pit maneuvers, as you see here,” Rogers said. “It’s not something that we want to do, but we train for the inevitable. On days like this, it’s good to have the training and our officers executed a perfect pit maneuver. You know, everybody’s alive.”
No injuries were reported in the incident.
