TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A suspect has been taken into custody days after Hillsborough County deputies said he shot and killed a 24-year-old passenger in a car while a child was in the backseat.

The suspect, Dayjon Clarke, 24, was found June 2 at a home on Logarto Circle West in Lutz, where he was arrested for first-degree murder and other related charges, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives said the victim in the May 30 shooting, Terrel Ferrell, was riding in the passenger seat of a car when the driver, an unnamed woman, pulled over to talk to Clarke along Progress Boulevard. The driver’s child was also in the backseat of the car at the time.

According to investigators, Clarke and the people in the car knew each other prior to the incident.

The sheriff’s office has not yet given a motive, but said Clarke suddenly began shooting at the vehicle. Ferrell was shot multiple times in the upper body. He was taken to a local hospital but later died from his injuries, authorities said.

The driver sped off after the gunfire erupted and, in doing so, struck a nearby bicyclist. Officials said the bicyclist sustained minor injuries.

The woman then drove to Thornton’s gas station on U.S. 301 to seek help. No other injuries were reported.

In addition to first-degree murder, the sheriff’s office said Clarke is also facing charges for shooting into a vehicle and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

“This violent act stole a young man’s life and put innocent lives in jeopardy — including a child,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Let this serve as a message: if you commit a violent crime in our community, we will find you, and you will face justice.”

The investigation remained ongoing Monday, and no further information was immediately available.
