INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. – The individual responsible for fatally shooting an Indian River County Sheriff’s deputy succumbed to his own injuries on Saturday, according to authorities.
The tragic incident took place at the Bermuda Club, located along State Road A1A, just north of Vero Beach and in close proximity to Wabasso Beach Park.
Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers reported that deputies were present at the residence to carry out an eviction of Michael Halberstam from his mother’s house at her behest. Upon their entry, Halberstam allegedly opened fire indiscriminately.
Deputy Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, aged 47, tragically lost her life inside the residence during the altercation.
In response, deputies returned fire, striking Halberstam. Initially, he was reported to be in critical condition, but he later passed away due to the injuries sustained.
On Saturday, Indian River County Sheriff’s Office announced that Sweeting-Mashkow has been posthumously promoted to sergeant “and will be addressed as Sgt. Sweeting-Mashkow henceforth.” the sheriff’s office announced.
Mashkow had served with the sheriff’s office for 25 years, starting as a 9-1-1 dispatcher.
Funeral service information will be released at a later date.
