AUGUSTA, Ga. () – A man who was injured in a police-related shooting at a BP station on Washington Road last October has passed away.

Authorities reported that 20-year-old Dalyn Elder was shot by Deputy Victor Rodriguez. The incident occurred after Elder allegedly fired at the deputy using a stolen firearm.

Following the shooting, Elder was transported to a local hospital for medical care. Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen has confirmed that Elder succumbed to his injuries at 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday.

Deputy Rodriguez was also reportedly wounded by Elder during the investigation into an armed robbery.

On the night of Wednesday, October 1, Deputy Rodriguez was shot on Washington Road near the Washington Crossing shopping center. The deputy was pursuing a suspect who fled upon mistakenly assuming the heightened police activity was due to his existing warrants for Aggravated Assault.

Elder was later charged with opening fire at two Richmond County Deputies, including Rodriguez, who was struck multiple times in the torso.

Deputy Amanda Donald who had also arrived on the scene opened fire on Elder, striking him at least once.

Until the encounter with Deputies Rodriguez and Donald, 20-year-old Elder had been wanted in connection to a shooting incident on the 1500 block of Central Avenue in May 2025 and was considered armed and dangerous at the time of the shooting of Deputy Rodriguez.

Deputy Rodriguez was released from the hospital Friday, October 3.

In late October, the Richmond County Sheriff`s Office received official clearance from the Regional Force Investigation Team and District Attorney Jared T. Williams regarding the actions of Deputies Victor Rodriguez and Amanda Donald during the October 2, 2025, incident involving Dalyn Dewayne Elder.

An autopsy for Elder has been scheduled.
