TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Joel Moreno Cobo faces charges of second-degree murder following the fatal shooting of a beloved Tampa DJ.

The community is preparing to say their final goodbyes to Dedrick Sykes, affectionately known as ‘DJ Shy Guy,’ at his funeral on Friday. At 41, Sykes had become a cherished figure in the area.

Authorities reported that Cobo and Sykes were driving through Ybor City when an altercation erupted near 5th Avenue and 22nd Street, ultimately leading to gunfire.

Witness Evan Chapman recounted the chaotic scene, saying, “We heard the shots, and it took everyone by surprise. People rushed to the balcony, and we saw the police arrive quickly, followed by an ambulance. It was a shocking moment.”

Cobo claimed he acted in self-defense; however, investigators refuted this assertion after discovering that Sykes was unarmed and posed no threat during the incident.

Family and community members have been pushing for an arrest since the time of the incident. Friday, they’ll focus on his legacy.

Tony Parker, a friend, said, “I’m thankful to have crossed paths with him, to meet him.” He adds, “I was only able to be as good as I was because he was great at what he was.”

Cobo was booked into the Hillsborough County jail and is expected to make a first appearance in court on Friday afternoon. According to jail records, the 31-year-old also has an ICE hold.
