Decades after the infamous “Texas Killing Fields” case began, a suspect has been formally charged, shedding light on a mystery that has puzzled investigators for nearly 40 years. This sprawling investigation involves the tragic discovery of around 30 bodies found along a Texas highway over several years.
James Dolphs Elmore Jr., aged 61, now faces charges of manslaughter and felony evidence tampering in connection with the death of Laura Miller. He is also accused of tampering with evidence related to the murder of Audrey Cook, as reported by FOX 26.
The charges are linked to the notorious “Texas Killing Fields” murders. Between 1984 and 1991, the remains of 30 women, including Audrey Cook, Laura Miller, Donna Prudhomme, and Heidi Fye-Villareal, were discovered near the intersection of Calder Road and Ervin Street in League City, Texas.

According to the Galveston District Attorney’s Office, Elmore is specifically charged with manslaughter and felony evidence tampering in the Laura Miller case, with an additional charge of evidence tampering in the murder of Audrey Cook. These details were shared by FOX 26.
For years, authorities in Texas have been working tirelessly to solve the mystery of who was behind these horrific murders. This recent indictment marks a significant development in their efforts to bring justice to the victims and their families.
In 2022, William Reece pleaded guilty to murder stemming from the deaths of Laura Smither, Kelli Cox and Jessica Cain, FOX 26 reported.
Over the last 40 years, authorities have pointed to Clyde Hedrick as the prime suspect in the murders of numerous women in Calder Road Field, according to the outlet.Â

Hedrick was reportedly convicted of abuse of a corpse relating to the death of Ellen Beason in 1986.
Beason vanished around the same time as Fye-Villareal and Miller, leading authorities to believe the disappearances were connected.Â
In 2013, officials reopened the investigation and Hedrick was indicted for Beason’s death.

He was convicted of manslaughter one year later and received the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, but was released on parole after spending just eight years behind bars, FOX 26 reported.
However, in 2024, the Galveston County District Attorney’s office began reexamining the case as part of a renewed effort to bring justice for the roughly 30 women found dead in the infamous “Texas Killing Fields.”
The investigation led authorities to seek grand jury indictments against Hedrick for the deaths of Cook, Fye-Villareal, Miller and Prudhomme, along with additional indictments against Elmore for alleged offenses stemming from the deaths of Miller and Cook.Â
Although Hedrick died before the charges could be presented to a grand jury, the indictment was still shown to maintain transparency and provide closure for the victims’ families.
Shortly after, Elmore was indicted for his alleged role in the deaths of both Miller and Cook, FOX 26 reported.Â
Elmore was subsequently taken into custody and later denied bond Tuesday evening.
The arrest was made with the help of multiple agencies, including the League City Police Department, Hitchcock Police Department, Galveston County Sheriff’s Office and FBI.Â
The Galveston County District Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
