TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) — New details were released Wednesday regarding the student believed to be responsible for carrying out a deadly mass shooting at Florida State University.

Tallahassee police said 20-year-old Pheonix Ikner remained hospitalized with significant injuries Wednesday but is expected to survive.

According to officials, Ikner was shot once in the jaw after he refused to comply with officers’ commands.

There was still no clear timeline for Ikner’s discharge from the hospital. However, he will be formally charged upon release.

Police could not speak to the specific charges but said they will be “up to and including first-degree murder.” The State Attorney’s Office will make the official determination.

Two food service employees, identified as Tiru Chabba, a 45-year-old father of two, and Robert Morales, an FSU alum, were killed during the April 17 shooting.

Six others were taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital with injuries. All but one of the patients have since been discharged, according to the hospital.

A motive for the shooting remains unknown as Ikner has refused to speak with police.

Court records have revealed more about his past, including that Ikner had several physical and mental health issues.

He’s also the stepson of a Leon County deputy and is believed to have gotten access to her weapons.
