SAVANNAH, Ga. () — Talahi Island residents are saying enough is enough when it comes to short-term rentals, as their neighborhood is becoming overrun with rentals and no one is taking their concerns seriously.

A quiet neighborhood turned into a vacation oasis. Neighbors living on Talahi Island shared their feelings about the rise of short-term vacation rentals in their area and how it’s been affecting their everyday lives.

Resident Dana Rutland said, “Now we’re forced to change our lifestyle to compensate for these rental units.”

Resident Lisa Mell said, “This is a little road coming in and out. You’ve got people parking on the curb, and you know, it is dangerous to do it this way. You can’t have 75 extra people on one end and 60 on the other it’s ridiculous.”

On top of the extra traffic, noise and trash, they worry about strangers coming into the place they call home.

Resident Jamie Holiday said, “I will see strangers paddleboarding by, I will see strangers swimming. I have three small kids. It’s very concerning that those strangers are just in our backyard. We don’t know who’s coming and going. Prior to that, we knew all of our neighbors.”

Neighbors say they have called multiple agencies to ask for rules, codes and permit requirements to be enforced, but they have received no help. They say this is a warning for other neighborhoods.

“I think it would be beneficial to try and get new regulations, but even the current regulations, they’re not enforcing,” said Dianna Grahame. “So, you’re next. This happened to us, and it’ll happen to your neighborhood before you know it, and then it’ll be too late”.

reached out to code enforcement but haven’t heard anything back. We will update you on their response.
