Tampa Community Calls for Justice and Transparency After Beloved DJ's Tragic Road Rage Shooting

In a tragic incident over the weekend, Tampa police are delving into the circumstances surrounding a fatal shooting in Ybor City that claimed the life of beloved local DJ, Dedrick Sykes, affectionately known as DJ Shy Guy.

As the investigation unfolds, Sykes’ family and friends are urging the Tampa Police Department for transparency. They are grappling with the devastating loss and the puzzling escalation of what seemed to be a minor road disagreement into a fatal encounter.

Addressing the situation, the Tampa police have been working to dispel misinformation surrounding the tragic event. Friends, who knew Sykes as a cherished figure in Tampa’s community, are left in disbelief. “He was loved by everyone. His nickname, Shy Guy, speaks volumes, so none of this makes sense,” expressed Ashley Gooden, a close friend.

Those who knew Sykes are wrestling with unanswered questions about the incident. “What could he have possibly said or done that would lead someone to such drastic action?” one friend pondered, reflecting the sentiments of many who struggle to reconcile this violent act with the character of the man they knew.

Tampa police said the incident started as a roadway dispute. Officers said there was an argument between Sykes and another man right before the shooting. Police said the man who fired the shots claimed self-defense, stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

Community advocate Elvis Piggott, who briefly made headlines last month in an unrelated incident where police said he drew a gun on a man and claimed self-defense, said both cases should be treated similarly.

“The community have a right to know that there’s someone out in this community that is driving, that perhaps don’t have the temperament to be behind the wheel, that will take it to the level of taking someone’s life,” Piggott said.

He also noted, “My name was plastered on every news channel in this city for weeks.”

Tampa police released a statement saying, in part, that investigators are “working diligently to gather all facts” and that the department is committed to a thorough and impartial investigation.

But community members said this is about consistency and transparency.

“We going to keep coming until answers, until justice is served. And to this family, they get what they deserve,” Piggott said.

Investigators said video and witnesses are being reviewed. No charges have been filed.
