TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Tampa City Council meets for the first time on Thursday since the passing of councilwoman Gwen Henderson.

City leaders have been sharing kind words and stories about the former schoolteacher since her passing, Tuesday.

“She is without a doubt, the quickest learner, the best council member of that time,” Councilman Charlie Miranda said.

Mayor Jane Castor shared, “Her decisions were always in the best interest of the community. She was just, in my mind, was an amazing individual that did many good things for our community.”

Thursday is the regularly scheduled meeting for the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency. Henderson served as chair of the board.

The position will have to be filled, as will her city council seat in District 5.

“Clearly, the mechanics have to go forward, despite our devastation, but there will be a special election, and it will be done because of the length of Councilwoman Henderson’s term,” Mayor Jane Castor said.

Any candidate for the position must live in Tampa City Council District 5.

As of Thursday, no date had been set for the special election.
