In a poignant tribute on Monday evening, Tampa’s skyline glowed blue, commemorating the valor and sacrifice of Master Police Officer Jesse Madsen, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty five years ago. This heartfelt gesture serves to honor the memory of MPO Madsen, whose courageous actions continue to resonate within the community he served.
On the fateful night of March 9, 2021, Officer Madsen made the ultimate sacrifice by steering his patrol car into the path of a wrong-way driver on Interstate 275. This selfless act prevented potential disaster and saved numerous lives, reflecting his unwavering commitment to the safety of others.
Madsen’s legacy extends beyond his final heroic moment. He was a decorated U.S. Marine combat veteran and a dedicated officer, having received the Life-Saving Award an impressive nine times. His dedication was matched by his devotion to his family, as a loving husband and father of three.
“Jesse Madsen gave his life so that others would have a tomorrow,” Tampa Mayor Jane Castor poignantly remarked. “Tonight, we illuminate our city to ensure his light, and the light of all our fallen heroes, never dims.” The city’s tribute stands as a lasting reminder of the bravery and selflessness that define true heroism.
“Jesse Madsen gave his life so that others would have a tomorrow,” said Tampa Mayor Jane Castor. “Tonight, we light up our city to ensure his light, and the light of all our fallen heroes, never fades.”

In light of his sacrifice, Madsen’s badge number, number 507, has been retired and he leaves behind a legacy that continues to influence the Tampa Police Department.
“MPO Jesse Madsen did not just stand between our community and harm, he intentionally faced it so that others could go home,” added Chief Lee Bercaw. “His sacrifice is the definitive standard of what it means to protect, and as we light the city blue, we reaffirm that his devotion to the safety of others continues to inspire this department.”
To date, four Tampa officers have followed MPO Madsen’s lead in selflessly serving the community by demonstrating the same courageous heroism in the face of imminent danger.
