TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — In a protest covering a lot of topics in Downtown Tampa, many people said they are still standing with Ukraine.

“Our grandma is there, our home is there, our school, and this is all very bad,” said Harry, an 11-year-old from Ukraine.

Harry and his younger sister held signs at the protest Tuesday. They said they are watching the relationship between the United States and their home country closely.

“Thank you so much for American for their support,” Harry said.

Support for the country has seemingly waivered over the last few days. After a heated conversation in the Oval Office Friday, President Donald Trump paused military aid to Ukraine.

“It puts them in a worse position. They’ve been fighting for three years and holding their own — of course with U.S. weapons — but they don’t have a chance without us,” said Shelley Alfonso, a protester.

People against the protest accused President Volodymyr Zelensky of not wanting peace, and said President Trump is trying to bring everyone closer to ending the war.

“Just because we want to put America first and stop the funding to Ukraine, doesn’t automatically make us pro Putin or pro Russia. The ultimate goal is world peace,” said Adam Francisco. “Whatever Trump did last week with that debate, it seems like it got the point across, and it looks like we’re one step closer to peace today.”

Since Russia’s invasion in 2022, the United States has given Ukraine nearly $66 billion in military aid.

It’s not clear how long the suspension will last as the White House said they want to ensure the aid is contributing to a solution.

Harry said he’s just waiting to go home.

“We want to, our country, be free and we really want to go back to our home,” Harry said.
