TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The City of Tampa will begin work this week on removing 47 pieces of street art, in accordance with a new Florida state law. Removals will occur in accordance with Florida Senate Bill 1662, which was signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis in June of this year.

The bill outlaws any street art on lanes, shoulders, crosswalks, intersections, and sidewalks. Murals removed include those created for LGBTQ+ pride, and the “Back the Blue” mural near the Tampa Police Department headquarters.

“We will not allow our streets to be commandeered for political purposes,” said Governor DeSantis in a post on X.

Florida SB 1662 claims that street art is a public safety concern. Art pieces will be removed in the City of Tampa within two weeks, according to city officials.

“A lot of these intersections were commissioned by different groups to, to add color and flavor and, and, you know, just enlighten parts of the community, and it’s not hurting anybody. I don’t understand this,” said Victor Di Maio, the chair of the Hillsborough County Democratic Hispanic Caucus.

Work has already begun in nearby communities, including St. Petersburg, and across the state.
