CHATANOOGA, Tenn. (WATE) — An investigation is underway after a Chattanooga police officer fatally shot a man while responding to reports of a burglary Thursday morning, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said.

According to preliminary information released by the TBI, officers from the Chattanooga Police Department responded to a call about a burglary around 2 a.m. on the 2100 block of Hamill Road. When they arrived, they found Kevin Barnes, 44, trying to flee in a vehicle.

A police officer then shot Barnes “for reasons still under investigation,” the TBI said. Barnes was pronounced dead at the scene.

11th Judicial District Attorney General Coty Wamp requested that TBI special agents investigate the case. The investigation is ongoing. The TBI’s findings will be shared with Wamp, who will determine if the shooting was justified.
