Tenants Push for St. Pete to Acquire Morgan Apartments Amid Foreclosure Crisis

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — The Morgan apartments in St. Petersburg are now facing foreclosure, adding to the list of troubles that have plagued the complex. Previously, News Channel 8 reported that the property owed the city hundreds of thousands of dollars and was accused of multiple safety code violations.

The St. Pete Tenants Union is calling on city officials to intervene and take ownership of the property to address ongoing issues.

Meanwhile, Hillsborough County has approved a plan to renovate the Benchmark International Arena, marking a positive development in the region.

“It’s beyond our control, so we need help,” expressed one of the residents of The Morgan. Another resident simply stated, “I’m leaving.”

“This is people’s lives,” said a former tenant.

The frustrations from current and former tenants have been shared for months. Now the threat of foreclosure looms over the complex. Pinellas County court documents show owner Lurin Real Estate Holdings defaulted on a more than $46 million loan. So where does this leave the tenants?

“This foreclosure case kind of came out a came out of nowhere, you know. And so we were discussing with the tenants like, you know, what should we do?” said Williams Kilgore, with the St. Pete Tenants Union.

Kilgore believes the City of St. Pete should take over. He fears a new owners could force people out. He said the remaining tenants need stability. The tenants union and residents plan to ask St. Pete city council to acquire the property on Thursday.

“We’re saying that the city needs to step in when this thing goes up to auction and to purchase it, to make it permanently affordable, permanently habitable, and also just to have, you know, accountability and transparency that you don’t get with a private landlord and corporate landlord,” Kilgore said.

The city has enterprise facilities like the Jamestown Apartments and Townhomes on Burlington Avenue North.

The Morgan is still not being maintained. 8 On Your Side reached out to a spokesperson for The Morgan, who said they would respond soon, but we still are waiting to hear from them.

Kilgore said the city taking over could give residents more power.

“We’re demanding that it comes under public control, because we can actually hold it accountable and the tenants can have a safe, stable and comfortable housing,” Kilgore said.

Residents and the tenants union will speak during public comment at the city council meeting Thursday, starting at 5 p.m.
