Terrence Shannon turns banner mishap right side up

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — It’s a law of physics, what goes up must come down. But when it comes to hanging jerseys to honor a great player, you really want it to go up the right way and stay there.

That wasn’t the case for Terrence Shannon Jr. at the State Farm Center this past Saturday. However, he was able to turn the mishap into a charitable opportunity.

He has partnered with Gameday Spirit to make shirts and sweatshirts saying, “When life has you upside down, turn it around!” Part of the proceeds will go to the Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club in Champaign.

“The shirts are more really than just apparel,” said Boys & Girls Club CEO Amy Brown. “They’re a lesson in finding an opportunity and in every challenge.”

Brown also said Shannon is no stranger to the Champaign club.

“Terrence has been onsite at Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club,” she said.

And he’s loved by the kids who go there.

“Our youth at Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club have always looked up to Terrence Shannon, and now they have another reason to admire him,” Brown said.

But it’s not just the fans who love Shannon. His college coach also holds him in high regard too.

“When you find excellence like Terrence Shannon found and you worked and you went through it and you went through a lot of struggles that you’ll never know about until he writes a book someday,” said Illinois Men’s Basketball Head Coach Brad Underwood. “The day I don’t care about that; I will retire this.”

Underwood also emphasized how much this moment meant to Shannon: A kid from Chicago who grew up watching U of I basketball.

“And to be up there with so few others, there’s not enough adjectives, there’s not enough words to describe how proud I am,” Underwood said.

Brown said she isn’t exactly sure how all the proceeds will be used yet, but she has some ideas.

“One of our first things will be uniforms for the basketball team,” Brown said.

The new jerseys will help kids who have dreams of following a similar path to Terrence Shannon Jr.’s.

Gameday Spirit said they just got the shirts and sweatshirts in at around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and they will be available to buy as soon as they’re out on the floor. The shirts will be $35 dollars and the sweatshirts are $50.
