SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Fire hydrant testing is set to begin in Springfield this week.
The Springfield Fire Department, in coordination with City Water Light and Power, will begin the testing on May 27. The tests are set for Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. until July 31.
The fire department said the testing is done to make sure the hydrants operate efficiently for fire protection purposes. When testing is happening, residents can expect water to become discolored in service areas near the hydrant tests.
If your water becomes discolored, the Springfield Fire Department suggests running cold water through the tap until the water turns clear. You should also delay washing clothes until the tap is clear. The fire department said in most cases, the water clears up in about five minutes.
For more information on hydrant testing, contact the Springfield Fire Department at 788-8474. CWLP customers may call Water Dispatch at 789-2323 (extension two) if water discoloration persists or for other questions on water quality.
