TEUTOPOLIS, Ill. (WCIA) — Two years after a deadly HAZMAT disaster in Teutopolis, community members are invited to a memorial event honoring the victims.

The Teutopolis Fire District said the St. Francis Church bells will toll at 8:41 p.m. on Sept. 29 to honor the five victims who died in the anhydrous accident. Community members are invited to pay their respects at the church entrance or the courtyard west of the main entrance.

Attendees are asked to arrive early to find a spot. Anyone with additional questions can call 217-821-2549 for more information.

On Sept. 16, the National Transportation Safety Board released its final report on the crash. Officials said the crash happened after a minivan passed a semi-truck carrying anhydrous ammonia in a no-passing zone. Another vehicle was approaching in the opposite direction at the same time, forcing the semi-truck driver into a ditch to give the minivan space to avoid a head-on collision.

The victims included a father and his two children who lived at the home where the crash happened and two people driving on Route 40 — a pastor from Missouri and a truck driver from Ohio. They were identified as:

  • Kenneth Bryan, 34, from Teutopolis, Ill.
  • Rosie Bryan, 7, from Beecher City, Ill.
  • Walker Bryan, 10, from Beecher City, Ill.
  • Danny J. Smith, 67, from New Haven, Mo.
  • Vasile Cricovan, 31, from Twinsburg, Ohio

Nine people driving through the crash zone suffered serious injuries and four others suffered minor injuries. Hundreds were evacuated on Sept. 29 and throughout much of the day on Sept. 30.
