Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday: Consumer Boycotts Gain Momentum Amidst Holiday Shopping Season

A consumer boycott is set to launch over the Thanksgiving weekend, spanning from Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Monday.

Dubbed “We Ain’t Buying It,” this boycott urges consumers to refrain from purchasing from large corporations. Organized by groups behind the No Kings protests held in June and October, the initiative targets companies they claim have supported “the Trump administration’s abuses of power,” as detailed on the No Kings website.

Specifically, the boycott calls out Target for allegedly succumbing to what it describes as the administration’s biased attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Home Depot is accused of collaborating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in actions described as the “kidnapping” of community members. Meanwhile, Amazon faces criticism for allegedly funding the administration in exchange for corporate tax benefits.

LaTosha Brown, co-founder of Black Voters Matter and a leading figure in organizing the boycott, explained the initiative’s goals to The Guardian. “We are reclaiming our power. We are redirecting our spending. And we are resisting this rise to authoritarianism,” she stated.

The five-day boycott is designed to coincide with some of the biggest shopping days of the year, including Black Friday and Cyber Monday, as well as another consumer boycott known as “The Mass Blackout.” This boycott describes itself as a “coordinated economic shutdown” and asks folks not to shop online or in-store, work or stream.

The National Retail Federation reports that a record 186.9 million people are planning to shop from Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Monday this year. The NRF forecasts that “holiday spending is expected to surpass $1 trillion for the first time during November and December.” This comes amid reports that many consumers are planning to spend less this year due to economic pressures.
