DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Three Kings of Peace, an anti-violence organization, has seen an uptick in vandalism on one of their buildings in the past week, rendering the structure “beyond repair,” according to the nonprofit.
Co-founder Ed Butler said it’s not the first time the organization has dealt with the problem. He said despite repairing minor vandalism last year, it forced them to stop activities and put the building on the market.
Butler said the recent vandalism spree ruined the plans he had for the building when the organization bought it three years ago; turning it into a communal hub for the kids they serve.
“This is total devastation,” Butler said. “We were going to have skating, the weightlifting, the computers, the library upstairs to build a better relationship with our kids.”
Another co-founder, Frank McCullough, said he saw an uptick in damage on the outside this week, and could not believe what he saw when he entered the structure.
“Double paned windows were broken,” said McCullough. “They’re coming in, taking out wire, taking out copper, taking our ventilator system out.”
That’s not all. Broken doors, smashed cabinets and kicked in walls are found throughout the facility. Mccullough said seeing how the building has been treated is heartbreaking.
“I just want the community to know this is how Danville appreciates those who help them, who are helping their young people,” McCullough said.
With the building still up for sale, Three Kings does not know what to do moving forward.
“It’s beyond repair,” Butler said. “We’re going to have to find some kind of funding to see if we can tear it down, or if anyone’s interested in helping us or buying it.”
Butler and McCullough said they’ve had conversations with police about the vandalism. WCIA reached out to the Danville Police Department and left a voicemail to see if they’re investigating the matter. The newsroom did not hear back.
