PORT WENTWORTH, Ga. ()– The Independence Day holiday is in full force and so is the holiday travel. AAA reports over 2 million Georgians will hit the road.

The AAA estimate puts this year’s travel up 2.9% from last year’s holiday weekend. spoke with travelers who stopped at the Georgia Welcome Center who said the traffic wasn’t that bad.

One traveler told News 3’s Isabella Baez, “We left this morning around 6 a.m., so we are a little tired. The roads have actually been really nice, luckily so we haven’t run into anything.”

Many travelers at the rest stop said they got on the road early in the morning. As a result, they didn’t see much traffic.

Georgia State Patrol reports that last year’s holiday weekend resulted in 472 driving under the influence (DUI) arrests and 537 traffic crashes.

Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety, Colonel William W. Hitchens III, said “We urge everyone to follow traffic laws, drive sober, avoid distractions, wear seatbelts and make sure children are properly restrained.”

As a reminder, South Carolina’s new hand free law prohibiting the use of handheld devices will soon go into effect. Georgia is already a hands-free state. Once it does, if you get caught operating a device while driving, expect a ticket.
