ATHENS – In a shocking incident that unfolded at Greece’s renowned Acropolis, a man armed with a knife attacked and injured two tourists on Tuesday morning, according to police reports.
The assault occurred close to the Acropolis Museum’s entrance near the base of the ancient hill, targeting a Greek American duo—one man and one woman. The woman sustained minor injuries to her leg, whereas the man received more severe cuts on his arm, police stated.
Authorities quickly apprehended the suspect, and the injured tourists were swiftly taken to the hospital via ambulance. Although details about the attacker were initially scarce, police suggested he may have been experiencing mental health issues.
Such violent street incidents are infrequent in Greece. Notably, in April, an unusual event saw an 89-year-old man taken into custody after he allegedly fired a shotgun at a social security office and a courthouse in Athens, injuring no fewer than four people over social security disputes.
The Acropolis, crowned by the iconic 2,500-year-old Parthenon and other historical landmarks, draws in throngs of sightseers. Last year alone, this historic site attracted approximately 4.6 million visitors.
