Tragic Christmas Day Accident: Scooter Driver Fatally Struck by Car on U.S. 27 in Davenport

DAVENPORT, Fla. (WFLA) — A fatal collision on Christmas Day claimed the life of a 52-year-old scooter rider on U.S. 27 in Davenport, as reported by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred when Ruben Perez exited a gas station on his 2019 Tao Scooter. The crash unfolded around 11:30 a.m. in the vicinity of Jacks Road.

In a related incident, a 13-year-old girl in Florida lost her life on the same day due to an ‘accidental’ shooting involving a 15-year-old, according to officials.

The authorities stated that Perez maneuvered across several lanes attempting to enter the highway’s inside lane and moved directly into the path of a 2022 blue Subaru WRX.

The Subaru collided with Perez’s scooter, propelling him onto the vehicle’s hood and shattering the windshield, the sheriff’s office detailed.

Perez was unresponsive when first responders arrived. Crews performed CPR and took Perez to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Deputies said he was not wearing a helmet.

No other injuries were reported. Officials said the driver of the Subaru and a passenger stayed at the scene.

The crash remained under investigation Friday, though authorities said they do not believe excessive speed or impairment were factors.
