In a somber turn of events for the political community, Nancy Metayer Bowen, who served as the vice chair of the Florida Democratic Party and held the position of vice mayor in Coral Springs, was discovered deceased at her residence on Wednesday morning. The Coral Springs police department confirmed her death following a welfare check conducted at approximately 10 a.m.

While the specifics surrounding Bowen’s passing remain scarce, authorities have disclosed that the incident is being treated as a potential domestic violence case. Further complicating the situation, reports have emerged indicating that Bowen’s husband was apprehended by authorities on Wednesday. Bowen was elected as vice mayor in 2020 and re-elected in 2024. She made history as the first Black and Haitian American woman to serve on the Coral Springs City Commission.

Bowen also served as the Vice Chair of Haitian Outreach for the Florida Democratic Party.

Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried released a statement following news of Bowen’s death, writing that “she loved her community deeply and believed, with every fiber of her being, that a better and more equitable future was possible for all of us.”

“Her memory will forever be a blessing to me, to our party, and to every person whose life she touched,” Fried continued. “My heart, my prayers, and the full love of the Florida Democratic Party are with her family and the people of Coral Springs as they face this unimaginable, devastating loss.”

Bowen’s family described her as “a sister, a daughter, and a friend whose warmth and laughter filled every room” in a statement posted to Instagram Wednesday

“Her legacy will live on not only in the policies she helped shape, but in the countless lives she touched,” the family wrote, in part. “We ask for privacy as our family grieves, and we thank everyone for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers.”

The Coral Springs Police Department also shared the following message Wednesday:

“We are heartbroken to share that Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer has died. She was more than a public servant, she was a light in our community. Her leadership was grounded in compassion, strength, and an unwavering commitment to others. Her impact on Coral Springs is immeasurable, and her loss leaves a void in our hearts. We ask our community to keep her family, loved ones, and all who are grieving in your thoughts and prayers. In this difficult time, we stand together as one city. We will carry her light, even in this darkness.”
