CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. – In a tragic incident over the weekend, two young boys from Florida lost their lives when an excavation they were creating in the sand unexpectedly caved in, as reported by ABC News.

The teenagers were entombed for over an hour at Sportsman Park located in Inverness.

Authorities identified the victims as 14-year-olds George Watts and Derrick Hubbard, according to ABC News.

A GoFundMe page has been established to support the families of the boys, capturing the ordeal as an “unimaginable nightmare” that unfortunately turned into reality.

“While playing together, the boys dug a tunnel in sugar sand and were inside when it suddenly collapsed. In an instant, our world was shattered. What should have been another day of childhood adventure turned into a heartbreaking loss that no parent should ever have to endure. Our precious boys were taken from us far too soon,” the GoFundMe reads.

The two boys grew up “side by side, bonded like siblings,” the GoFundMe said.

ABC News said the two boys were students at Inverness Middle School. School officials released a statement on the incident earlier this week:
