VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A crash late Saturday on State Road 40 in Volusia County killed a motorcyclist and left two ATV riders with serious injuries, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 11:50 p.m., west of S.R. 40’s intersection with Pine Woods Road, troopers said.

According to an FHP crash report, the 35-year-old Ormond Beach man riding the motorcycle was traveling east on S.R. 40 while the ATV — being operated by a 28-year-old Ormond Beach woman with a 22-year-old Ormond Beach woman riding as a passenger — traveled west on the eastbound right grass shoulder. The ATV entered the direct path of the motorcycle, causing both vehicles to collide head-on, the report states.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene while the women were hospitalized for treatment of serious injuries, according to FHP. Troopers believe the man was the only rider involved in the crash who was wearing a helmet.

FHP is still investigating.
