BRANDON, Fla. (WFLA) — Tragedy struck at Brandon High School as a 17-year-old student lost his life after a collision with a CSX train on Thursday morning, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident unfolded around 8:20 a.m. on January 8, when deputies swiftly responded to the scene near Lakewood Drive. Upon arrival, they discovered the teen who had sustained severe injuries from the accident.

Initially, authorities communicated with 8 On Your Side, suggesting that the boy’s injuries were not life-threatening. However, his condition took a turn for the worse, and on Saturday, the sheriff’s office reported that he had been hospitalized in critical condition.

The boy died of his injuries sometime on Jan. 9, HCSO said.

Throughout the investigation, police learned that the teen was walking on the tracks toward his high school when he was struck by the train from behind as he tried to jump out of the way.

While investigators are not sure how the accident occurred, they did find a pair of headphones near the victim, and there was dense fog blanketing the area that morning.

HCSO said it remains an active investigation.
